1 – Overview

Cache and Cookie Washer for IE is a very useful program for cleaning up your tracks that you leave behind when using Internet Explorer. When using Internet Explorer, many people do not realize that it stores information about what they have done, what websites they have visited, and it even allows web sites that they visit to store "cookies" (files that contain can personal information about them). This causes two problems. The first is that, if they know where to look, anyone else can see what you have been doing on the Internet with IE, this raises many privacy concerns. The second is that much of your IE activity information takes up valuable disk space, recovering this space can be very beneficial.

Cleaning up the history of your activities from IE can be a tedious chore of manually going through each place a history file or entry is stored and removing it, and some files like the "Index.dat" file contained in the history folder of IE cannot be cleaned out from within Windows . Even if you clean your cache, cookies, and history from within the IE browser regularly, the index.dat files will continue to store information about what web sites you have visited and what cookies have been saved. A common problem is that these index.dat files can grow to enormous sizes taking up drive space and slowing down the IE browser. If privacy and disk space are to be maintained, cleaning these tracks must be done every time you are finished using IE. Cache and Cookie Washer for automates this process for you! It will automatically run in the background and clean up your tracks, when you want, and which ones you want. You can have it automatically clean when Windows is started or shutdown and you can also schedule timed cleanings.

The shareware version will expire 30 days after the installation. Please read the next section on how to register.

3 – Automatic Wash and Bleach Options

3a – Wash on Windows Startup

Checking this box will cause Cache and Cookie Washer for IE to automatically clean up your selected items every time Microsoft Windows is started.

3b – Wash on Windows Shutdown

Checking this box will cause Cache and Cookie Washer for IE to automatically clean up your selected items every time Microsoft Windows is shutdown.

3c – Timed Washing

After checking this box the pull down menu to the left of it will become active. Using the pull down menu you can select the time interval that you would like Cache and Cookie Washer for IE to clean your items. Time intervals range from every 15 minutes to once a month. Once you have selected a time, Cache and Cookie Washer for IE will clean your items automatically when the time is reached.

3d - Add Bleach to Wash Items

This option instructs Washer to "shred" the files it washes by overwriting the file a set number of times with random characters. This will render the files unrecoverable by utilities such as undelete and unerase. The default setting for bleach will overwrite a file 2 times, which is usually enough. The higher the number of overwrites the longer the wash cycle will take. Overwriting a file 3 times respects the DOD 5220.22-M directive for sanitizing a file on a Non-Removable Rigid Disk or a Removable Rigid Disk and overwriting a file 7 times respects the NSA approved seven-pass file erasure method. You can set the number of times to overwrite a file by clicking on the INFO button next to the BLEACH WASH ITEMS checkbox.

3e - Command Line Washing (support for System Agent: Task Scheduler)

You can use the Windows System Agent: Task Scheduler to automated cleanings for Cache & Cookie Washer. To do this add the full path to the "autowash.exe" program to the Task Scheduler. For example: "c:\program files\washer-ie\autowash.exe" would be a valid path for an automated wash from within the Task Scheduler. Also entering: "c:\program files\washer-ie\autowash.exe" at the DOS prompt or from within a batch file would also be valid. The "autowash.exe" program instructs washer to wash all selected items and then close after washing has completed.

4 - Wash Items

4a - Cache/Temporary Internet Files Directory

This option will clean out the currently logged in users Internet Explorer cache/temporary internet files directory.

Special Note: Because of the way Windows uses the index.dat files to display the contents of the temporary internet files directory, even after Washer has erased the actually cache files, the references from the index.dat file will still be visible within the directory. You should use the "clean history and index.dat" feature of Washer to clean out the references and have the directory appear empty.

What is the "cache"? The cache directory contains web pages that you have visited in the past. IE uses the caches files to access web pages that you visit frequently instead of redownloading the page from the Internet every time you access it.

4b - Cookies Directory

This option will clean out the currently logged in users Internet Explorer cookies directory. The cookies directory contains "cookie" files.

What are "cookies"? - Files that a web page will sometimes create to keep track of what activities you have been doing on that page and/or to keep personal information such as your login id and password for the page.

4c - History and Index.dat files

This option will clean out the currently logged in user Internet Explorer history and index.dat files. These files can only be cleaned by Cache and Cookie Washer for IE when Windows starts. They are in use and cannot be deleted or accessed while Windows is running.

What are "index.dat" files? - Index.dat files are files that Windows uses to store visited web page addresses and cookie information to cross reference between standard files contained in the cache and cookies directory. Even if you clean your cache, cookies, and history from within the IE browser regularly, the index.dat files will continue to store information about what web sites you have visited and what cookies have been saved. A common problem is that these index.dat files can grow to enormous sizes taking up drive space and slowing down the IE browser.

4d - Address Bar Drop Down Menu

This option will clean out the currently logged in user Internet Explorer Address Bar.

This option is not enabled in the trial version.

What is the "address bar"? - The address bar is the area where you type in the web site address you want to visit from within IE. If you click on the down arrow at the right of the address bar

4e – Clean database files with IE CPL

Normally the TIF directory does not appear empty after a wash. This is because the IE cache database file still stores pointers to the files that were there. After washing, when you view the TIF directory what you see are the pointers from this database, the actual files are gone.

This option clears the database by opening the IE Internet Control Panel and automatically clicking the CLEAR HISTORY and DELETE FILES buttons. This will make the TIF directory appear empty immediately after a wash.

4f – Downloaded Program Files Directory

This directory is where Internet Explorer stores Active X and Java applets that have been downloaded from the web. Checking this item will instruct Washer to clean out this directory.

4g – America Online (AOL) Cache/Drop Down List

If you have America Online installed on your system, this option will clean out the Drop Down List and Cache that is displayed at the top of the main AOL window. If you do not have AOL installed on your system you will not need to check this box.

4h – IE 5 Auto Complete Form Data

Internet Explorer 5.x can store a record of most everything that you type into any web site form. Form data can be things such as all the keywords you have ever typed into a search engine and personal information such as your name and address. Selecting this option will wash all IE 5 auto complete form data.

5 – Washing

Click on the WASH NOW button at the bottom left of the main window. You will see the status window as Cache and Cookie Washer for IE cleans through your selected items.

Note: You will not see the status window while Cache and Cookie Washer for IE is washing during a timed washed or during a Windows startup wash.
